Is an engagement session for you? Engagements are so engaging. Romance is in the air and the anticipation of a lifetime together comes to a crescendo in the rush during the weeks leading up to your wedding, causing you to wonder: Is an engagement shoot necessary? After all, your wedding pictures share the beginning of your life, right?

Having an engagement session is important for several reasons. Read on to see why!

Is An Engagement Session For You? | Wisconsin Wedding Photographer

It’s a perfect opportunity to get to know your photographer.

Realistically, the photographer you hired to capture your wedding should be the same as the one who shoots your engagement pictures. That way you begin to get to know your photographer and build a relationship before the big day!

We’ve probably only chatted via e-mail or over the phone so this is the perfect opportunity to really get to know each other. I absolutely love talking wedding details, but I want to get to know the both of you. I want to know how you met, fell in love, the things you are looking forward too. When your wedding day rolls around, I don’t want to be just known as the photographer! I want to be your friend, dress fluffer and personal assistant! I mean, let’s be honest, who wants to meet your photographer for the first time at your wedding? Engagement sessions are a perfect way for us to connect, get to know each other and talk things through before your big day!

It’s allows you to get comfortable in front of the camera.

Next, this time allows you to get comfortable in front of the camera, figuring out how you work best together before the wedding. I totally get it, being in front of the camera is awkward (and what do we do with our hands??). The first few minutes tend to always be a bit awkward as we find our groove, but once we get into to it – it gets a little easier! It’s all about being natural and interacting with one another! I want you two to flirt, be in love, laugh, and snuggle! My style is very natural and I try to limit the number of staged poses, instead I want to capture the embraces, love and laughter just as they are happening!

It’s a perfect time to test out your makeup.

Your engagement session is also the perfect time to have a test run on your make-up. You’ll be able to see how your makeup will look with pictures, and there will be plenty of time to make adjustments if need be! Why not apply a little extra mascara and some fake lashes to highlight your eyes? Maybe apply a fun shade of lipstick to make your smile pop? Whatever you decide to do it’s a great way to see how your make-up will translate to your images!

It’s a great opportunity to show off your personalities.

Engagement sessions are the perfect opportunity to show off your personalities in a more casual setting! Unsure of where you want to get your pictures done? Here are some ideas to help get you thinking:

  • At the place he proposed. After all, what better way to capture an engagement than the place where it all started!
  • At your favorite restaurant. Meaningful memories happen with food, ambiance and your special song playing in the background.
  • Doing your favorite activity. You both enjoy playing checkers. What better way to capture your personality than in the heat of game play, the agony of defeat, or the comedy of contemplating your next move?
  • Where you first met each other. Whether your first meeting was a discussion at the library or fumbling for the door at the local coffee shop, going back to your beginnings is a marvelous memory.
  • Images with your pet. What better way to capture your new family than by including a beloved shared pet in your session?
  • Your favorite skyline. Your city is beautiful at any time of the year, and the skyline shares where you live now, a beautiful location that might change with time.
  • A downtown urban session. Fun and funky, picture in alleyways or in otherwise undiscovered locations of your area make for a more intimate view of the city.
  • A romantic beach. In the morning, evening or any time of day, the sea meets an endless sky for a feeling of forever.
  • At your favorite, cute coffee shop. Quirky and cozy, local mom and pop shops are a great way to take a quick break to refuel and to catch some local, architectural shots with you in the process.

Is an engagement session for you?

Engagement sessions are the perfect way to get to know your photographer, get comfortable in front of the camera and, best of all, you will have some amazing photographs for you to remember this special time in your lives! This is your time together to relax, be playful and just have some fun!
