One of the most common questions I get as a Wisconsin wedding photographer is:

“What happens if it RAINS on our wedding day?!”

First, take a deep breath—your wedding will be absolutely magical, no matter the weather! While no couple dreams of rain on their big day, I promise you, it doesn’t have to ruin a thing. In fact, some of my favorite Milwaukee wedding photography moments have happened on rainy days!

Rain brings a unique charm to your wedding photos, creating a romantic, dreamy atmosphere that sunny days just can’t replicate. Soft, diffused light from an overcast sky results in flattering portraits, while a little drizzle adds an intimate, cinematic touch. So, instead of stressing over the forecast, let’s embrace the possibilities!

Rainy Wedding Day Photography Tips | Wisconsin Wedding Photographer

1. All You Need Is ONE Covered Spot!

Rain might seem like a big deal, but trust me—one covered location is all we need to capture stunning portraits! A gazebo, wrap-around porch, barn entrance, or even a thick tree canopy can provide enough coverage while still letting in beautiful, natural light.

Another great option? Many Wisconsin wedding venues and Milwaukee wedding venues have stunning indoor spaces that can serve as the perfect backdrop for rainy-day portraits.

And if you’re up for it? We can step out in the drizzle for dramatic, one-of-a-kind shots under the rain! Some of the most breathtaking wedding photos happen when couples embrace the moment—think a romantic kiss under a clear umbrella or a dreamy, misty garden scene.

2. Let Your Photographer Handle the Rainy Wedding Photos

You have enough on your plate—let me worry about the photos! As an experienced Milwaukee wedding photographer, I always have a rainy-day plan ready.

If rain is in the forecast, I’ll:
✔️ Scout covered locations at your venue ahead of time
✔️ Adjust the timeline to sneak in portraits between showers
✔️ Bring clear umbrellas, which add a whimsical touch to photos
✔️ Encourage fun rain shots if you’re up for it!

Some of my favorite rainy wedding photos include couples dancing in the drizzle, sharing a cozy moment under twinkling lights, or twirling in a misty field. Rain adds a romantic, cinematic vibe that’s impossible to replicate on a dry day!

3. Have a Rain-Ready Wedding Plan

The best way to avoid stress? Plan ahead!

Here are a few ways to prepare for a rainy wedding day:
Have a cute pair of rain boots on hand—perfect for fun, adventurous shots!
Consider a second outfit (like a short dress or jumpsuit) if you want to explore more creative rainy-day photos.
Ask your hair & makeup artists for weather-resistant products—waterproof mascara and a strong setting spray are lifesavers!
Keep guests comfortable by providing umbrellas, cozy blankets, or warm drinks like cocoa, tea, or cider.

Your wedding team is there to handle any weather surprises, so trust your vendors and focus on enjoying the moment!

4. Rain Makes Your Wedding More Memorable!

Some of the most unforgettable wedding stories involve unexpected weather!

🌧 Rain encourages guests to cozy up and enjoy the moment.
🌧 It brings out playful, candid interactions that make for amazing photos.
🌧 It creates unique, heartfelt memories you’ll cherish forever.

Plus, in many cultures, rain on your wedding day is a sign of good luck—symbolizing a fresh start, renewal, and a strong marriage. Imagine standing under an umbrella, holding hands as raindrops fall gently around you—it’s a scene straight out of a movie!

If you’re still worried about rain, just remember: at the end of the day, it’s not the weather that makes your wedding magical—it’s the love you’re celebrating!

So grab those cute umbrellas, let go of the stress, and soak in every beautiful moment—rain or shine!
