On the journal last week, I broke down what a money mindset is, how it’s formed, and why it’s important to understand. If you haven’t read that post yet, be sure to go back and read that first!
Are you ready to have a positive money mindset? People who have a healthy mindset around money believe things like:
- It’s possible to achieve my financial goals.
- I will retire with an abundance of wealth.
- I can give generously to others who are struggling.
- With a budget, I have the freedom to spend on the things that are important to me.
If you currently have a negative mindset around money –– that is okay! If you are willing to do the work, there are a few different ways you can begin the process of improving your money mindset.
#1 Read, Read, Read
Begin by reading books that will help shape your brain in a more positive way. Below are a few book suggestions to get you started:
- The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
- The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey
- Switch on Your Brain by Caroline Leaf
- The Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
#2 Begin to Make Small Changes
Start small and make tiny shifts with your money habits. A few ways include:
- Commit to giving to a charity or church
- Start a budget or tracking your expenses
- Read a few pages in a financial book each day
- Look over your financial statements once a week.
- Take a financial class or work with a coach one-on-one
#3 Dream About Your Future
Picture your life down the road. When do you want to retire? Where? What do you want to do when you retire? Write down all of your dreams… nothing is too big!
Let those dreams be your motivation as you start to plan for your future retirement. Write your dreams out on a sticky note and put it in a place where you can see it everyday. Those dreams are possible!
#4 Give Away Some Money
It’s true what they say: giving is the most fun you can have with money. Giving away money is also a proven way to help change your mindset from selfish to selfless. It might be difficult at first, but just try it!
Tip the bill the next time you go out to eat. Give a gift card to a single mother to help her purchase diapers. Donate to a charity that is meaningful to you. The possibilities are endless!
Changing Your Mindset Is Possible
Success is possible for you! Shifting your mindset is a journey, but having the belief that you can do it will make all the difference.
Your behavior will follow your beliefs, thus, making it easier to stick to good money habits.
