Your tribe. Your wolf pack. Your people. Whatever you call them, a woman’s friendship with her best girlfriends is a powerful one. They say the strongest friendships often start in childhood- you know, with the nice girl in Kindergarten who invites you over for play dates, is your bunk buddy at Girl Scout Camp, attends your barney themed party, and dances along side you at many talent shows. If you’re really lucky (like me), the respect, trust and fun found in these sacred early relationships truly do last forever.
I’m not really sure what the circumstances were when I first met Bridget, but our friendship began when we were only in Kindergarten. We were inseparable to say the least. I have years and years of memories of us playing together, obsessing over Mary-Kate and Ashley, attending Girl Scouts together, playing at her family’s cabin making up random songs, boy talks and many other experiences that I refer to often. Bridget was always a part of my very favorite stories, the ones that start with “Remember when…”
It’s been over 20 years since we first met and I can’t imagine life without Bridget in it. When I first met her, I knew we would be friends for life. She was always there by my side through the best of times and through the worst of times. We’ve moved more times than I can count, dated more people then I care to remember and have had more life changes then we ever thought possible. Despite it all, we always managed to stick together and support each other no matter what.
Bridget recently got an amazing job opportunity out in San Diego, California and it was one she couldn’t pass up. It’s a funny thing to talk about our hopes, dreams, and goals and then see them actually play out. I was talking to my Dad just the other day and he said it’s an amazing thing that our dreams are falling into place.. Bridget moved to San Diego and is working a dream job and I’m working towards my dream of owning my own photography business.
Today, I embark on a much needed girls weekend getaway to visit Bridget in San Diego with our other two high school friends, Brianna and DeAnna. Despite all four of us living hundreds of miles apart, we still try to make each other a priority. When we get together, it’s like time never passed and we’re able to pick right up where we left off. These are the times that I live for and I cannot wait to relax by the beach, drink some wine and reminisce with these beauties over the weekend.
As I get older, I realize now that it is less important to have a ton of friends and more important to have real ones instead. Bridget, thank you for being real. You were always around when you needed to be.. graduation, my wedding and my pregnancies. You were also there for all the not-so-fun times when I needed you the most. I am so lucky that our paths crossed all those years ago and I’m honored to call you one of my best friends.
Cheers to many more years of friendship! 🙂
