Wow, can you believe it? The year is already halfway over! But don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time left to smash those goals—six whole months, in fact! Whether you’re feeling like a superstar or stuck in the messy middle, a mid-year review of your goals can be a game-changer! Let’s dive in and see how you’re really doing, not just how it feels!
Refocusing Your Goals: How To Conduct A Mid-Year Review
Why a Mid-Year Review Matters
You’ve got big goals, right? But as Kevin Ngo says, “If you don’t make the time to work on creating the life that you want, you’re going to spend a lot of time dealing with a life you don’t want.” It’s amazing how fast a year can slip by. Taking a day to step back from the daily grind and focus on your business can help you reset, adjust your course, and gain the momentum you need to crush the second half of the year!
What You’ll Need for Your Review
- Your goals for the year! Yep, dust those off!
- A calendar to look back at the past six months and plan the next six (think sales goals, product launches, vacations, etc.).
- An up-to-date profit & loss statement and any other key metrics.
- A notebook, pen, and calculator!
When to Conduct Your Mid-Year Review
Mid-year! Ideally at the end of June or early July. This timing is perfect for reflecting on how far you’ve come and refocusing on what’s ahead. I like to block out a whole day, but even an hour can make a big difference!
My Mid-Year Review Process
When I settle in for my review, I concentrate on three main areas: personal, professional, and financial. I pose the same set of questions for each of these categories. The questions I ask are as follows:
- What is going well?
- What isn’t going well?
- Lessons Learned
- Rate yourself (1-10): 1—surviving, 10—thriving.
- Why am I feeling this way?
- What would a “10” look like?
In looking at all of your goals between the 3 categories, also ask yourself the following questions:
- Where have you seen the most growth?
- Which goals need more nourishment?
- What are you saying “no” to this season?
- What are you saying “yes” to this season?
Diving Deeper: Key Metrics to Review
To dig a little deeper into the data, I look at:
Sales: How are you tracking toward your sales goal? Compare your current revenue to your annual goal. How many more clients or sales do you need to hit your target?
Spending: Review your spending. Are you on budget? Do you need to cut back anywhere? Is there room to invest more in areas like equipment, education or advertising?
Marketing Metrics: Website traffic, newsletter growth, podcast downloads—track these monthly to see your business growth.
Time: Check your Toggl report to see how many hours you’ve worked. It’s eye-opening to see where your time goes and how to use it best!
Conversions: Track your referral sources, inquiry numbers, bookings and product sales. It’s all about those conversion rates!
Celebrate Wins: What’s gone well? New features, hitting sales goals, booking dream clients? Name those wins!
Look Forward: Refocus and recommit! What do you want to achieve in the next six months? Are your goals the same, or have they evolved?
Even though this process might seem easy, taking the time to think, review, analyze, and plan can bring you incredible clarity and focus for the second half of the year. If you want to take it a step further, consider reviewing your goals every quarter. I use the Cultivate What Matters Goal Planner to write out my goals and review them every three months. It’s been a total game-changer when it comes to my mid-year review!
I hope this guide to my mid-year review process helps you as you sit down to evaluate your own progress. Here’s to an amazing second half of the year! 🎉
