Let’s talk about one of my favorite wedding traditions (or non-traditions, depending on how you see it): the First Look! I’ve shared my love for First Looks countless times, and for good reason—they’re truly incredible! Yet, I know some couples hesitate because they feel it’s too “non-traditional.” Trust me, I get it—I once had the same mindset.

When I was planning my own wedding, I dreamed of that iconic moment where my husband would see me for the first time as I walked down the aisle. I wanted the tears, the overwhelming joy, the moment everyone talks about. And guess what? I got all of that—and then some—because we also chose to do a First Look. Not only was it one of the most intimate and memorable parts of our day, but it also added so much more to the entire experience.

The Magic of a First Look

Here’s the thing: I’ve photographed over 300 weddings, and I’ve come to realize that what couples really want in that first moment is a reaction. Some worry that doing a First Look will diminish the emotions or take away from the aisle moment, but that couldn’t be further from the truth!

On a wedding day, nerves are high for both the bride and groom. The groom, who may have been cool and collected earlier, is suddenly hit with the gravity of the day. He’s often tucked away, waiting anxiously in a small room before walking into a crowd of hundreds of expectant guests, all waiting to see his reaction. While this moment is powerful, it’s far from private.

Now imagine this instead: the groom is led to a quiet, private spot, free of onlookers. His bride, the love of his life, quietly calls his name, and he turns to see her for the first time. In this intimate setting, he can embrace her, cry with her, and tell her how stunning she looks without the pressure of an audience. They can share this moment together, uninterrupted, for as long as they want.

Not only does a First Look calm nerves and create a magical moment, but it also allows the couple to enjoy more of their wedding day together. After their First Look, they can move seamlessly into portraits, bridal party photos, and even touch-ups—all before the ceremony. This extra time helps keep the day relaxed and fun, with less rushing and stress.

By the time the ceremony begins, the groom is no longer a ball of nerves. He’s excited and ready to see his bride walk down the aisle. And yes, the emotions are still there! Many grooms still tear up (or full-on cry!) when they see their bride coming toward them—it’s just as special, if not more so, because they’ve already shared a private moment together.

Your Day, Your Way

Of course, if a First Look isn’t for you, that’s perfectly fine! I’ll help create a timeline to ensure your day is just as smooth and stress-free. But if you’re curious about this beautiful tradition, let’s chat! First Looks aren’t just about photos—they’re about connection, calm, and soaking in every moment of your day together.
